Apparitions

Although there are numerous apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary, some are more recognized then others. They are as follows:

Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mexico, 1531. She appeared to Juan Diego, a convert to the church. In one of her appearances, she told Juan Diego to pick some roses and bring them to the bishop. When they were unwrapped from his cape, a beautiful image of the Immaculate Conception was found.

Fátima, Portugal, 1917. An angel announced the coming apparition of Mary to 3 children; Lucia dos Santos, Jacinta and Francisco Marto.

The six apparitions were seen by thousands of spectators. She told the children that she was the Lady of the Rosary and that people must pray the rosary on a daily basis. The miracle of the sun appeared on October 13 to a crowd of over 50,000 people. The children were given a number of secrets that would be later revealed to the world. She spoke of the importance of world peace, and the need to pray for it.

Paris, 1830. Mary appeared to Catherine Laboure a nun with the Sisters of Charity. An angel told her to go to the convent chapel. It was brilliantly luminous. Mary appeared to her and gave her a message of the importance of prayer. She asked her to create the Miraculous Medal and promised that all who wore it would receive grace. It is now worn by millions worldwide.

La Salette, France, 1846. Mary appeared to 14 year-old Melanie and 11-year-old Maximim, who were herding cattle. She appeared weeping, wearing a crown ringed with roses. She complained that the people had neglected religion. A healing spring, miraculously appeared, where she had stood.

Lourdes, France, 1858. Mary appeared 18 times from February 11 to July 16, 1858. She identified herself to Bernadette Soubirous as the Immaculate Conception. Once again, a healing spring appeared. It and the chapel built to honor Mary have attracted millions of visitors to the site each year.

Knock, Ireland, 1879. Mary and other heavenly figures were seen by 15 people at the village’s chapel on August 21. They also saw an altar and a lamb with a halo of gold stars and a cross.
